Gov. Huntsman Signs International Education Week Proclamation
Gov. Jon Hunstman Jr. recently signed a proclamation, officially declaring Nov. 13-17 as International Education Week in Utah.
International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. After seeing other colleges and universities celebrate this week, Maryna Storrs of the UVSC International Affairs Office decided the College should take part as well and created the proclamation for the governor to sign. Five students from UVSC’s International Student Council, representing Armenia, Barbados, Namibia, Japan and Russia traveled to Capitol Hill in Salt Lake to attend the signing. Others from various colleges in Utah also attended the signing in the governor’s office.
“The governor spent more time talking with our international students than he did with our administrators,” Storrs said. “It was a tremendous experience for our students. We were really lucky to have this opportunity with the governor.”
To commemorate International Education Week on a local level, UVSC has created Global Engagement Week to tie in to the global awareness pillar in the College’s new mission statement. Events like an international food festival, an International Children’s Choir concert, guest speakers and a Mr. and Ms. International pageant will be held to raise awareness of the community’s role in the global community. For a schedule of events or more information about Global Engagement Week, visit http://www.uvsc.edu/intnl/events/Events_Calendar.html, or call the International Affairs Office at (801) 863-8897.
