UVSC School of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences Raises more than
$40,000
The Utah Valley State College School of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences surpassed their goal of raising $40,000 after accepting the Fulton Challenge in May with the incentive that Ira A. and Mary Lou Fulton would match every dollar raised, up to $1,000 per donor, if their goal was met. So far, HASS has collected $40,722.54.
Renowned philanthropists Ira A. and Mary Lou Fulton of Provo invited UVSC students, faculty, staff and alumni to set and accomplish fundraising goals in their specific schools and departments by the end of December 2006. Particular goals range from $3,000 to $65,000, for a total College goal of $375,000.
William W. Cobb, Jr., dean of the School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, said that more than 160 individuals and families have contributed to the goal for his school.
“We’ve learned a valuable lesson in fundraising,” he said. “It has brought a lot of people together to work toward a common goal. The whole essence of the challenge is getting the stakeholders to step up themselves and they have.” Barbara Hammond, assistant dean for external relations for the School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, said, “The Fulton Challenge has created a culture of giving at UVSC. I’ve been amazed at the generosity of individuals with a passion for UVSC. Reaching the $40,000 goal today is really the accomplishment of students, faculty, staff, alumni and our advisory board.”
Dean Cobb said the money the School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences raises during the Fulton Challenge will primarily fund scholarships and specific departments, directly benefiting UVSC students. Despite reaching their goal, Hammond said donations will still be accepted in any amount. For more information, go to www.uvsc.edu/giving or call (801) 863-6246.
