Art Meets History Exhibit on Display at UVSC
An exhibit titled “Art Meets History” is currently on display in the Library Art Gallery in the Losee Center until October 23. The exhibit features drawings of the John Wesley Powell Expedition done by artist Dean Fausett.
On May 24, 1869, ten men with four boats led by Major Wesley Powell left Green River, Wyo., to explore one of the last unmapped areas of the United States: the Green and Colorado River systems and the Grand Canyon. On August 30, 1869, six men and only two boats came out of the canyon, making their way into history.
In 1964, the United States Bureau of Reclamation commissioned Utah artist William Dean Fausett to record the pioneer spirit of Major Powell and the majestic grandeur of the country he explored. The JP Morgan Chase Art Collection donated the 22 sepia drawings to the Utah Art Council’s State Art Collection.
“They are wonderful drawings and it is a very popular exhibit” said Keith Rowley, UVSC technical services librarian.
Dean Fausett has also painted portraits of Ronald Reagan, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Hoagy Carmichael and former Vermont Governor Thomas Salmon, among other award winning murals that have been displayed in the Washington D.C. capitol building. Fausett, born in Price, Utah, split his time between Dorset, Vermont and New York. Fausett painted murals and landscapes, as well as portraits. Fausett died in December 1998 at the age of 85.
The exhibit may be viewed anytime during regular library hours, Monday - Thursday 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. Friday 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
